The Global AI Race

Who Is Leading the World Model Race in 2026?

No single lab leads on every axis. Google DeepMind holds the interactive frontier, World Labs shipped the first commercial product, and Odyssey, NVIDIA and a cluster of robotics labs each own a different slice. Capital followed: more than $3B went into world-model startups in the first half of 2026.

Main finding

As of November 2026 no single laboratory leads on every axis. Capability is split: Google DeepMind holds the interactive real-time frontier, World Labs sells the first commercial 3D world product, Odyssey and Decart build general simulation for interactive use, NVIDIA distributes open physical-AI models, and robotics labs own embodiment. Capital is concentrated and public, but commercial maturity is still early and no vendor publishes market share.

Competitive landscape

Google DeepMind

Research access

Real-time interactive simulation, at research grade

Technology
Genie 4, announced 27 October 2026: a natively multimodal world model that generates an interactive environment in real time, with generated audio. Genie 3 preceded it in August 2025.
What is demonstrated
Navigation and interaction inside generated scenes, and reasoning inherited from the Gemini family. Access is limited to trusted testers, so nothing here is a commercial service.
Funding disclosed
Funded inside Alphabet. No external round for the world-model programme has been disclosed.
Differentiation
The widest general simulation stack: video, audio, interaction and reasoning in one programme.
Still unresolved
Reported interaction horizons remain short, and there is no commercial licence for the capability.
Commercial applications
Training environments for agents and robots, interactive media, safety testing.

These organizations are not interchangeable. Each is defined by the environment it simulates, the maturity of what it sells and the customer it serves. Every entry states only what the participant has demonstrated, and every fact is as published up to 6 November 2026.

What supports it

  • Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on 27 October 2026, a natively multimodal world model for real-time interactive simulation with generated audio, opened to trusted testers (DeepMind, 27 October 2026).
  • World Labs launched Marble in November 2025 as a commercial product that generates navigable 3D worlds from a prompt or an image (TechCrunch, 12 November 2025).
  • World Labs raised $1B on 18 February 2026, including $200M from Autodesk, in a round reported at a valuation of about $5B (Reuters, 18 February 2026).
  • Odyssey raised a $310M Series B at a $1.45B valuation on 17 June 2026 to accelerate world simulation (Odyssey, 17 June 2026).
  • NVIDIA reported more than 2 million downloads of its Cosmos world foundation models by January 2026, distributed openly for physical AI (NVIDIA, January 2026).
  • Venture investors committed more than $3B to world-model startups in the first half of 2026, with World Labs, Decart and Odyssey among the largest recipients (Forbes, 30 June 2026).

What this does not claim

  • Funding is not capability and not revenue. No market shares are published for this category, and none are claimed here.
  • Several claims rest on vendor demonstrations and limited access programmes rather than independent measurement.
  • All figures are as published up to 6 November 2026 and may move quickly in either direction.

Planning assumptions used

  • The comparison groups capability families rather than ranking one vendor above another.
  • Every competitive statement is traceable to a dated public source listed below.

Open before signature

  • Which capability family matters to blockchain finance, and who actually sells it?
  • Which of these can be licensed at all, on what term, and with what data rights?
  • How would we validate a claim without becoming a research programme ourselves?
